If you are involved with sports medicine, you have no doubt interacted with someone involved in cheerleading. From young ages, our youth are participating in cheer in various forms in private clubs or through their schools. However, is cheerleading safe? Dr. Mark Halstead received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He stayed at the University of Wisconsin for his pediatric residency, followed by a year as the chief resident. Following residency, he completed a pediatric and adult sports medicine fellowship at Vanderbilt University. He has been an elected member to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness and the Board of Directors of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). He has served as a team physician or medical consultant to numerous high schools, Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, Washington University, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Athletica, and St. Louis Rams. He serves and has served on many local, regional and national committees as an advisor for sports medicine and concussions. Dr. Halstead is a national recognized expert in sport-related concussions and pediatric sports medicine.

Jennifer King - A Guest on The Pediatric Sports Medicine PodcastJennifer King: 

Dr. Jennifer King is a board certified pediatric sports medicine physician with Hawai‘i Pacific Health. She specializes in sports injuries in the pediatric and adolescent population and has a special interest in dance and performance medicine, injury prevention, and the female athlete. Dr King is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Hawai’i, John A. Burns School of Medicine.
Dr. King attended medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at Cooper University Hospital/Children’s Regional Medical Center. She completed her pediatric sports medicine fellowship at Jersey Shore University Medical Center where she provided medical coverage for Rutgers University, Georgian Court University and Holmdel High School, as well as coverage for the Olympic Development Program for Soccer, Little League Baseball, and AVP Beach Volleyball.
Dr. King has been practicing in Hawai’i since 2008 at the Kapi‘olani Bone and Joint Center and the Pali Momi Bone and Joint Center. She is a medical consultant for Kamehameha Schools, HCAMP and HHSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. She is active in many community boards as well as on the planning committee for various medical conferences.
During her free time, Dr. King enjoys taking dance classes, savoring her husband’s culinary masterpieces, training 2 teenagers to be awesome human beings, and being trained by her goldendoodle to just live in the moment.

Greg Canty A Guest on The Pediatric Sports Medicine Podcast

Greg Canty: 

Dr. Greg Canty is the Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Center at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. He is an Associate Professor of Orthopedics and Pediatrics at the UMKC School of Medicine. His education journey includes medical school and pediatrics residency at the University of Louisville, a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Children’s Mercy Kansas City, and a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado.
He is a long standing member of the AAP’s Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness and previously served on the Council’s Executive Committee. He is also a member of AMSSM, ACSM and PRiSM. He serves on the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA). Most importantly he is the father of 3 young girls, a youth sports coach, and a huge advocate for improving the health and wellness of all youth through physical activity and sports participation.
