What kind of reaction do you get when you read a news article reading about a grade-school kid who’s running a marathon? It typically doesn’t get news coverage because it doesn’t happen often, but if you look at comments on social media there are often lots of comments about the cruelty of it. The “craziness of the parents”, even comments of it being child abuse. Let’s bump it up to middle school or even highs chool. Does it get a similar reaction? Today on the podcast, we’re going to touch on a somewhat controversial question: Is it ok to let a kid – run a marathon?

Mark Halstead:
Dr. Mark Halstead received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He stayed at the University of Wisconsin for his pediatric residency, followed by a year as the chief resident. Following residency, he completed a pediatric and adult sports medicine fellowship at Vanderbilt University. He has been an elected member to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness and the Board of Directors of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). He has served as a team physician or medical consultant to numerous high schools, Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, Washington University, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Athletica, and St. Louis Rams. He serves and has served on many local, regional and national committees as an advisor for sports medicine and concussions. Dr. Halstead is a national recognized expert in sport-related concussions and pediatric sports medicine.

Joel Brenner:
Dr. Joel Brenner is the Medical Director of CHKD’s Sports Medicine program and the director of CHKD’s sports concussion, dance medicine and running medicine programs. He is also the director of the CSG Sports Medicine division. His most recent interest has been in developing a program of Mindfulness for the young athlete. He is currently a professor of pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). He is trained in Pediatrics, Sports Medicine and Adolescent Medicine.
Dr. Brenner is the past chairperson for the AAP Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness and a past member of the Board of Directors of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine. He is currently on the VHSL Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.
He is the team physician for local high schools, Governor’s School for the Performing Arts, and 2 professional dance companies (TRDance and Virginia Ballet Theater).
He was one of the co-editors for the January 2017 British Journal of Sports Medicine issue on the young athlete and the lead author of the AAP Sports Specialization and Overuse, Overtraining and Burnout reports. He also helped create the 2016 NBA and USA Basketball’s Youth Basketball Guidelines.
