I think any of us who are involved in sports medicine and the care of young athletes appreciates those in the media who just get it. I know I’ve been interviewed multiple times over the years for either print articles or for broadcast and sometimes the focus of the article or interview doesn’t seem to get what we really want to convey to public when certain quotes or sound bites are chosen over others. It’s really refreshing when we have friends in the media who can really highlight a topic and who do it well. Today on the podcast, we speak with an award-winning journalist and discuss her journey into the world of sports safety and advocating for the health of our athletes.

The Host of this Program:

Mark Halstead:

Dr. Mark Halstead received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He stayed at the University of Wisconsin for his pediatric residency, followed by a year as the chief resident. Following residency, he completed a pediatric and adult sports medicine fellowship at Vanderbilt University. He has been an elected member to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness and the Board of Directors of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). He has served as a team physician or medical consultant to numerous high schools, Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, Washington University, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Athletica, and St. Louis Rams. He serves and has served on many local, regional and national committees as an advisor for sports medicine and concussions. Dr. Halstead is a national recognized expert in sport-related concussions and pediatric sports medicine.

Stephanie Kuzydym is a DuPont and Emmy award winning journalist, who is the sports enterprise reporter at the Louisville Courier Journal, which is part of the USA TODAY Network. She received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana University and has had jobs in Oklahoma, Northeast Ohio, Houston, Cincinnati and now Louisville. In the world of sports medicine, she reported a seven-month investigation into sudden death in youth sports called Safer Sidelines. She was recently awarded the National Athletic Trainers Association’s President’s Service Award, the Secondary Schools Athletic Trainers’ Committee advocate award and the Korey Stringer Institute’s Life Saving Education Award.
