We are turning the page from our leap year month into March of 2024. It’s time for National Athletic Training Month again. Each year we highlight several athletic trainers to talk about their roles, some interesting cases, struggles, and advice for those starting out in the field. Today on the podcast, I am joined by three secondary school athletic trainers.

Dr. Mark Halstead - Host of The Pediatric Sports Medicine Podcast - St. Louis, MOMark Halstead: 

Dr. Mark Halstead received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He stayed at the University of Wisconsin for his pediatric residency, followed by a year as the chief resident. Following residency, he completed a pediatric and adult sports medicine fellowship at Vanderbilt University. He has been an elected member to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness and the Board of Directors of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). He has served as a team physician or medical consultant to numerous high schools, Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, Washington University, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Athletica, and St. Louis Rams. He serves and has served on many local, regional and national committees as an advisor for sports medicine and concussions. Dr. Halstead is a national recognized expert in sport-related concussions and pediatric sports medicine.

Gini Fite:

Gini Fite graduated from Missouri Western State University where she received her AAS in Physical Therapist Assistant and served as a student AT while receiving a BS in Exercise Science. She has practiced as a PTA since 1999 and AT since 2002. She has served since 2011 at Smithville High School. She is also involved with the Secondary School committee for D5 and serves as the chair for MoATA, the Missouri Athletic Trainer Association. She also is an active member of MSHSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee

 

 

 

Mike Hopper: A Guest on The Pediatric Sports Medicine PodcastMike Hopper:

Mike Hopper is the Head Athletic Trainer at Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, TX. Mike has practiced at the Secondary School level since graduating from Southeast Missouri State in 2010 with a Bachelors in Athletic Training. Mike also has a Masters Degree from the University of South Florida in Pediatric Sports Medicine. Mike is active on social media surrounding advocacy for athletic training and sports safety and is also active in the NATA.

 

 

 

 

Dustin Fink: A Guest on The Pediatric Sports Medicine PodcastDustin Fink:

Dustin Fink is an athletic trainer in Central Illinois providing coverage as the athletic trainer for the Mt. Zion School District. Dustin has been a certified athletic trainer for over 20 years. He graduated from Colorado State University – Pueblo and then moved on to the Colorado State University located in Ft. Collins. Upon completion of his Masters in Health and Exercise Science with emphasis on Sports Psychology he moved to Central Illinois where he has remained since. In 2009 he started his blog “The Concussion Blog,” which has been cited in prominent news outlets and has been featured in an article in the New Yorker and for the book ‘League of Denial’. He is now a faculty member of the Concussion Corner. He recently rotated off the Illinois High School Association Sports Medicine Advisory Committee where he spearheaded the contact limits for football.
