Nicholas J. Hearne - The Host of The My Big Fat Pull List PodcastNicholas J. Hearne:

Blessed with an overactive imagination, Nick spent his early years absorbing as much pop culture as possible. From comic books to television, films, sci-fi, fantasy, horror – if it was great storytelling, he assimilated it! His fascination with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel Comics X-Men drove him to become an avid reader of all literature and a devoted comic collector at the age of eleven! Even though Nick enjoyed most comic book related material, his deep passion for all things “mutant” led to his alter ego being formed, the Uncanny Mister X! In recent years, Nick has co-founded his own comic book company, Archlight Comics, a film company, Archlight Studios, and has become a skilled podcaster and podcast editor. Mister X has taken all of Nick’s talents and found an outlet for his mad ramblings… the My Big Fat Pull List podcast!

Jacob Petri:

Just a common man, working hard with his hands, Jacob Petri has always had an eclectic taste in the world of pop culture. As a child, Jacob read comics, watched Saturday morning cartoons, enjoyed televised sports entertainment, played video games and collected trading cards and action figures. As an adult, he took his love of over the top theatrics and parlayed that into a mediocre Pro-Wrestling career, as he believed Pro-Wrestling was the closest he could get to live action comic books.
As Pistol Danger, he’s used his knowledge and skill both in the ring and on the internet, navigating video games during Let’s Plays and dishing out advice about the wrestling business. Needing to conquer new forms of entertainment, Pistol Danger has turned to podcasting, hoping to educate people on the finer points of geek culture, from comic books to films and everything in between.

Sean Murphy - The Host of The My Big Fat Pull List PodcastSean Murphy

Born with the ambition to one day be a professional football player and then join the military, Sean Murphy was always drawn towards hero based cartoons such as G.I. Joe and the X-Men. Sadly, those dreams were crushed after a terrible accident while playing street football. Sean learned that he was born with missing bones in his feet and his doctors informed him that he wouldn’t be able to play pro football let alone join the military. Missing out on being the hero he wanted to be, Sean turned towards the heroes he knew and loved… comic book superheroes!
As his teenage years turned to adulthood, Sean found a deep love for pop culture. Taking part in role-playing games, cosplaying as his favorite characters at conventions, Sean even worked at a comic book shop for over a decade. His need to absorb geek culture and fun facts earned him the nickname Smurphy. A fun-loving and sometimes socially clueless podcaster, Smurphy is eager to pass on all he knows and then some.

Cycle Of The Werewolf (The Novella) Versus Silver Bullet (The Film)

Stephen King has a body of work that is ripe for adaptation. Over the decades many of his short stories and novels have been adapted into everything from feature films, television miniseries and even comic books. Depending on their faithfulness to the source material, those adaptations run the gauntlet of being surprisingly good to painfully bad. But what about those adaptations penned by the man himself? There are only a few examples of King being in charge of transferring his work from one medium to another and we here at the Versus Machine are taking advantage of that! Get ready for Cycle Of The Werewolf (the 1983 novella) VERSUS Silver Bullet (the 1985 film)!

Mary Shelly’s FRANKENSTEIN: A Celebration 200 Years In The Making!

It’s often credited as the first “monster” book. The granddaddy of all monsters.  A novel that dared to ask the questions of not only the moral implications of “playing God” but also what is the purpose of life?  What basic human needs are most important?  What lengths will we go to defend and or avenge them?  And what actual right do we have to any of it?

For over 200 hundred years it has spawned hundreds of film, television, stage and comic book adaptations. Inspired countless concepts that are now so associated with horror lore they are one with the genre. And influenced hundreds of creators, artists and storytellers to peak behind the dark side of science as well as the consequences of human curiosity.  We are of course talking about Mary Shelley’s masterpiece Frankenstein, The Modern Prometheus.

Join us as we dive into the history and legacy of the greatest monster of them all and celebrate the 200th birthday of Victor Frankenstein, The Creature and Shelley’s triumphant horror novel and discover why, after 200 years, it is still alive!…here on this special episode of 2GuysTalkingHorror.

Pros And Cons Of Comic Conventions

With comic books being more mainstream than ever, it’s no surprise that comic conventions, or Comic Cons, are extremely popular. But with the growing crowds of younger, inexperienced fans, it seems that the etiquette of con goers has declined. As well as the vendors themselves. And lets not forget all the possible distractions, like cosplayers, and misrepresentation of geek culture, like The Big Bang Theory. Are they helping or hurting the cause?!

During this episode of My Big Fat Pull List, the crew share stories of nightmare con moments, give advice to venders on how to sell their books more efficiently and warn inexperienced comic collectors to mind their manners when hunting through long and short boxes. All this and more inside the Pros & Cons of Comic Conventions!

Those Other Star Wars Comics

Comics based off of movies and television shows aren’t a new thing. As far back as the Golden Age you can find adaptations. A few of those adaptations even launched their own ongoing series. Sometimes those stories mattered and were included in what is called “cannon”. Other times those stories were just for fun, not having any impact on the larger narrative.

One of the great things about comic books is that there are no restrictions when it comes to continuing a story from another medium. Take the Star Wars Universe BEFORE Disney bought the rights. Not only were there dozens of novels that continued the adventures of Han, Luke and Leia, but comic books as well. Thanks mostly to Dark Horse Comics.

Strap in for a trip in to lightspeed as our trio of geeky hosts travel to the world of the Star Wars Expanded Universe to look at Those Other Star Wars Comics during this episode of My Big Fat Pull List!

Revamping Bat-Villains

When it comes to super villains in comic books, the norm for the longest time was make them colorful looking so they pop of the page and don’t give them too complicated of a backstory. Simple and eye catching. Once television and animation became a factor, comic book fans were seeing their favorite characters acted or drawn out on their TV sets for the first time and they were just as colorful and simplistic as they were on the comic page.

All that started to change in the early 1980’s. The writing in comic books became more sophisticated, more adult. Sure, the villains were still colorful, but their methods and reasoning became more grim. And with film adaptations going from campy to gritty, the villains became the whole reason to go to the movie theater. The prime example of this is Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Listen in on the Original Geeks as they come up with backstories and performers to bring to life more realistic versions of some of Batman’s “greatest” foes. It’s time to Revamp A Bat-Villain on My Big Fat Pull List!
