Category Archives: My Big Fat Pull List

Today’s saturation of comic book content makes it almost impossible to keep track of it all. Whether you want to know the difference between Daredevil and Batman, or you’re ready to throw down with your viewpoint on comics in social media, The My Big Fat Pull List Trio of professional comic geeks will give YOU the education to deal in BIG to make FAT stacks in the game of pop culture superfandom! This is My Big Fat Pull List!

Observe & Report – The Arrowverse!

Adapting comic book characters into live action can be hard. Are the colorful costumes going to look right in real life? Will the over the top heroics be believable outside of the comics page? Can special effects fool audiences into believing a man can fly?
Comic book properties are a hot commodity for both television and film, so getting the basics correct should be priority…right? What happens when a universe is built for our small HD screens and many people overlook it because it’s on a network known for focusing on the hamfisted drama of beautiful people, their sex drives and the campy cheese that comes with it? Honestly, you miss out on some great action, compelling character pathos and super heroics so awesome that they could make the most jaded geek smile.
Prepare to be wowed, maybe, as we share the ups and downs of spandex on television during Observe & Report: The Arrow-verse!

The Hosts of this Program:

Nicholas J. Hearne - The Host of The My Big Fat Pull List PodcastNicholas J. Hearne:

Blessed with an overactive imagination, Nick spent his early years absorbing as much pop culture as possible. From comic books to television, films, sci-fi, fantasy, horror – if it was great storytelling, he assimilated it! His fascination with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel Comics X-Men drove him to become an avid reader of all literature and a devoted comic collector at the age of eleven! Even though Nick enjoyed most comic book related material, his deep passion for all things “mutant” led to his alter ego being formed, the Uncanny Mister X! In recent years, Nick has co-founded his own comic book company, Archlight Comics, a film company, Archlight Studios, and has become a skilled podcaster and podcast editor. Mister X has taken all of Nick’s talents and found an outlet for his mad ramblings… the My Big Fat Pull List podcast!

Jacob Petri:

Just a common man, working hard with his hands, Jacob Petri has always had an eclectic taste in the world of pop culture. As a child, Jacob read comics, watched Saturday morning cartoons, enjoyed televised sports entertainment, played video games and collected trading cards and action figures. As an adult, he took his love of over the top theatrics and parlayed that into a mediocre Pro-Wrestling career, as he believed Pro-Wrestling was the closest he could get to live action comic books.
As Pistol Danger, he’s used his knowledge and skill both in the ring and on the internet, navigating video games during Let’s Plays and dishing out advice about the wrestling business. Needing to conquer new forms of entertainment, Pistol Danger has turned to podcasting, hoping to educate people on the finer points of geek culture, from comic books to films and everything in between.

Sean Murphy - The Host of The My Big Fat Pull List PodcastSean Murphy

Born with the ambition to one day be a professional football player and then join the military, Sean Murphy was always drawn towards hero based cartoons such as G.I. Joe and the X-Men. Sadly, those dreams were crushed after a terrible accident while playing street football. Sean learned that he was born with missing bones in his feet and his doctors informed him that he wouldn’t be able to play pro football let alone join the military. Missing out on being the hero he wanted to be, Sean turned towards the heroes he knew and loved… comic book superheroes!
As his teenage years turned to adulthood, Sean found a deep love for pop culture. Taking part in role-playing games, cosplaying as his favorite characters at conventions, Sean even worked at a comic book shop for over a decade. His need to absorb geek culture and fun facts earned him the nickname Smurphy. A fun-loving and sometimes socially clueless podcaster, Smurphy is eager to pass on all he knows and then some.

Our Giant-Size Annual!

Comic book annuals have been around for a long time, but the attention they receive, especially today, are a mixed bag, compared to their ongoing titles. At their height, annuals cronicalled the most important stories of our favorite characters. And at their lowest… filler stories given to “new” talent to test their skills. To comic collectors, all issues matter, or at least they SHOULD. Too many fans fear that the next Annual they pick up is just going to be a filler story. The sometimes multiple tales appearing inside an annual SHOULD deliver world building, SHOULD deliver character development, or at the very least, SHOULD deliver action packed entertainment!

Regardless of a mashing of smaller stories or connection to a universe reaching cross over, at the heart of the Annual debate is still the worry “Do these stories matter?” During OUR Giant-Size Annual, we’ll be asking YOU the same questions as we fill this episode to the brim with segments that may leave you asking “Does any of this matter?”, here on My Big Fat Pull List!

Pros And Cons Of Comic Conventions

With comic books being more mainstream than ever, it’s no surprise that comic conventions, or Comic Cons, are extremely popular. But with the growing crowds of younger, inexperienced fans, it seems that the etiquette of con goers has declined. As well as the vendors themselves. And lets not forget all the possible distractions, like cosplayers, and misrepresentation of geek culture, like The Big Bang Theory. Are they helping or hurting the cause?!

During this episode of My Big Fat Pull List, the crew share stories of nightmare con moments, give advice to venders on how to sell their books more efficiently and warn inexperienced comic collectors to mind their manners when hunting through long and short boxes. All this and more inside the Pros & Cons of Comic Conventions!

Those Other Star Wars Comics

Comics based off of movies and television shows aren’t a new thing. As far back as the Golden Age you can find adaptations. A few of those adaptations even launched their own ongoing series. Sometimes those stories mattered and were included in what is called “cannon”. Other times those stories were just for fun, not having any impact on the larger narrative.

One of the great things about comic books is that there are no restrictions when it comes to continuing a story from another medium. Take the Star Wars Universe BEFORE Disney bought the rights. Not only were there dozens of novels that continued the adventures of Han, Luke and Leia, but comic books as well. Thanks mostly to Dark Horse Comics.

Strap in for a trip in to lightspeed as our trio of geeky hosts travel to the world of the Star Wars Expanded Universe to look at Those Other Star Wars Comics during this episode of My Big Fat Pull List!

Revamping Bat-Villains

When it comes to super villains in comic books, the norm for the longest time was make them colorful looking so they pop of the page and don’t give them too complicated of a backstory. Simple and eye catching. Once television and animation became a factor, comic book fans were seeing their favorite characters acted or drawn out on their TV sets for the first time and they were just as colorful and simplistic as they were on the comic page.

All that started to change in the early 1980’s. The writing in comic books became more sophisticated, more adult. Sure, the villains were still colorful, but their methods and reasoning became more grim. And with film adaptations going from campy to gritty, the villains became the whole reason to go to the movie theater. The prime example of this is Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Listen in on the Original Geeks as they come up with backstories and performers to bring to life more realistic versions of some of Batman’s “greatest” foes. It’s time to Revamp A Bat-Villain on My Big Fat Pull List!

The Changing World Of Comics

At one point in time, the only way to enjoy your comic books was to sit down, hold them in your hands and turn the pages. Then, when it was time to put them away, you got up, grabbed a poly bag and board, slid your comic in and put it away, preferably in a long or short box. If you wanted to read a specific storyline, you had to dig through your collection and pull out all the related issues. That’s how it was done.

Then the age of Trade Paperbacks and Digital Comics arrived…

No longer did you have to hunt through your collection for a story. The Trade Paperback has all the issues in one place, easy to store on a shelf.
No longer did you have to bag and board your newest comic acquisitions. The Digital Download allows for easy storage on your computer, along with being able to read your books anytime, anywhere, so long as you have a device to read them from.

With these types of advancements, it’s been said that the world of printed comics is dying. The O.G.’s of My Big Fat Pull List have something to say about that during this episode revolving around The Changing World Of Comics!
